Judy Spires Resigns As President Of Acme Markets

Judy Spires announced her resignation as president of Acme Markets on March 8, “to pursue a new career opportunity.” The resignation took effect March 12.

At presstime, no replacement had been named, but the process to identify Spires’ successor is currently under way. In the interim, the Acme leadership team will report directly to Pete Van Helden, executive vice president of retail operations for Supervalu.

Spires was named president of the Malvern, PA division of Supervalu in February 2006, soon after Acme’s then parent company Albertsons agreed to sell to Supervalu, CVS and an investment corporation for $9.7 billion.

Spires got her first job at Acme Markets in 1970 while in high school. She holds a bachelor’s degree of La Salle University. She also holds an MBA from La Salle.

Most of Spires’ career so far has been with Acme Markets, beginning in the stores in 1970 and rising through the ranks to serve in such diverse roles as vice president of sales and advertising, vice president of human resources and administration, vice president of operations and senior vice president of marketing.

In 2002, she was promoted to president of the Albertsons’ Rocky Mountain division in Denver before moving to Dallas/Fort Worth in 2004.

Spires returned to Acme in February 2006 to replace then president Carl Jablonski, achieving her life-long goal by being named president.

The Spires announcement comes just a week after another Supervalu division president departed the company as Ron Dennis retired from Virginia Beach, VA Farm Fresh on March 5.
